Summer reading @ your library
Did you know
that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while
those who do not often slide backward? Children lose an average of
two months of instruction during the summer months, or roughly 22
percent of what they learned during the school year. There is
a simple solution to this dilemma and that is to keep your children reading
and a great way to keep them motivated to read is to join your library's
summer reading program.
This year's
reading program for pre-readers and elementary school children is called "Get
a Clue ". The
theme for teens is "YNK@the library ". Fun family
programs and incentive prizes further
encourage the reading habit.
Reading five
books over the summer results in a gain of about three points on standardized
reading tests and students participating in a summer reading program
are more likely to read at their grade level or above than their nonparticipating
peers. Bottom line is those who read more, read better. Call your
local library for more information
or or click on the links below for local library summer reading events.
Your library's
summer reading programs are fun, they're free, but the best part is
that your children will be reading and carrying literacy skills with
them for life.
