Genealogy Resources

Ancestry.com
http://www.ancestry.com/

A commercial site that requires a fee to access all databases; however,
recent databases and those that are updated are available to search for free for two weeks.  There is also a forum discussion for surnames and the Ancestry World Tree, a database of genealogy submitted by researchers.  It boasts close to 80 million names, but it is only as good as the researcher submitting it was.

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet
http://www.cyndislist.com/
A mega-index of all genealogical websites - over 95,000 listed. Arranged
in an easy-to-use alphabetical order by subjects such as adoption, vital records, or country and ethnicity.

FamilySearch
http://www.familysearch.org/

This Mormon family research site allows people to search three important
things: the IGI (International Genealogical Index), Ancestral File, and the holdings of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.  The IGI is a database of births, deaths, and marriages from around the world gleaned from primary sources, such as church records and town records, as well as secondary sources, such as printed genealogies and town histories.  The Ancestral File is the database of submissions of family trees to the Mormons.  The Family History Library is the premier genealogical library in the United States.

GenForum
www.genforum.genealogy.com/

The largest and most popular genealogical forum on the Internet. One can
post messages under specific surnames and search the messages already listed.  A good way to find other researchers with a common interest.

RootsWeb.com
http://www.rootsweb.com/

This site includes links to many genealogy tools and resources, databases, mailing lists and message boards. It includes California cemetery
information and California birth records which give birth date, name, parents' surnames, and locality of the event. The California death records give death date, name, parents' surnames, Social Security number, birth date and locality of the event.

San Mateo County [CA] Genealogical Society
http://www.smcgs.org/
This is the Web site for the San Mateo County Genealogical Society which maintains a small collection and offers help from volunteers. Their Web site includes information on classes and workshops, meetings, and
publications.

Sutro Library Information
http://www.onelibrary.com/Library/calslsut.htm
With the largest collection of genealogy materials in the Bay Area, The Sutro Library is the genealogical depository for and a division of the California State Library. Among the holdings are thousands of family genealogies, as well as historical records of the states. Since the library lacks its own website, this independent site provides essential information about the library and its collections, including instructions on how to access the catalog online.

USGenWeb Project
http://www.usgenweb.org/

Every U.S. county has a web site for genealogy and this is the main page
for this project.  These web sites are also accessible through Cyndi's List. Content varies from county to county.  The sites are all  volunteer-supported and what they have is free to use.
