When a man is found in Glasgow's prosperous West End district, his face blown off by a point-blank-range shooting, the P Division detectives quickly establish his identity, but that's the easy part. Why should a petty crook from the East End of the city make straight for the West End on his release from prison? And what about the crime that sent him there? The police brought him in on charges of arson and robbery, blaming him for the destruction of Cernach Antiques - a crime that is totally out of character for him. Even more suspicious is the visit the owner of the ruined shop later made to the condemned man in prison
