Frequently Asked
Questions
Who can be a volunteer?
Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. The only requirement
is the ability to read and write and a willingness to share their
skills with someone requesting help. Volunteers must be 16 years
or older.
How do I become a
volunteer?
The first step is to contact our office at (650) 321-8818
to find out when our next tutor training program will be. All Project
Read volunteer tutors must complete our initial tutor training sessions.
Our tutor training is spread out over four sessions totaling approximately
15 hours. Sessions are normally offered during the evenings and
on weekends. Each tutor also needs to fill out a data sheet that
includes basic information such as telephone number, hours available,
etc.
I have never tutored
anyone before. What kinds of support do you offer someone like me?
Besides the tutor training, we have an extensive library of literacy
books, videos and audio tapes, and software programs. Professional
staff are available for help and advice. Weekly brown bag support
sessions, regular literacy training sessions and computer literacy
training for all of our tutors and learners are available on an
ongoing basis.
How do I get a student
(learner) once I complete the training?
Our Tutor/Student Coordinator will match you with a learner based
on a number of factors, including times available to tutor, personal
interests, backgrounds and locations or transportation issues
How often do I need
to meet with my learner?
We ask that you meet with your learner two times a week for at least
1 1/2 hours each session.
How long am I obligated
to volunteer for Project Read?
We ask that you plan to spend at least six months as a tutor.
When is the Project
Read Office open?
