Adult Literacy ProgramsProject Read
Learning
to read can be the most important and life-changing choice
a person can make. One out of five Americans has difficulty
with many everyday life skillswriting a check, reading
warning labels, following directions for a recipe, reading
the want ads. Literacy allows a person to participate much
more fully in life. Voting for the first time can be the
beginning of an active role in the community. Improved writing
skills may be the key to keeping a job or a promotion. Reading
a book to a child can connect a parent to their child's
school and education. Whatever the goal, being literate
allows people to feel a part of and participate in the world.
San
Mateo County Project Read programs are located throughout
the county. Our programs are designed to help students achieve
their specific literacy goals. These can include a wide
range of activities such as: studying for the GED, preparing
for the citizenship exam, reading the Bible, improving job
skills, or learning to read books to a child or help with
homework.
